Someone once told me that auto manufacturers were requires to warranty seatbelts for life. Is there any truth to that claim?

Yes, I believe so. At least this was what I was told by a dealer (Subaru) when I had them fix a twisted seatbelt for free. What issue are you having?

It sort of makes sense. I’ll have to check back here to see what the verdict is - and is it just the belt itself, or the whole mechanism?

I wonder if GM would warranty the latch in my Chevelle that won’t release the middle rear belt...

Also I wonder if Ford would warranty my p71's passenger’s seatbelt which only retracts upon slamming the door...

I think that refers to the life of the vehicle. There is something similar for emissions control systems, it is ten years or 100,000 miles (whichever comes first.)

I believe so - I used to work in parts at a Honda dealer (granted, 25 years ago), and we would occasionally order a replacement for a 10-15 year old car (these would have been ~1976-83 Hondas), always under warranty. I recall being told then that it was a Federal requirement.

The rear seatbelt keeps ratcheting you tighter into the seat. 05 Impala.

Yes that is true. I worked at an Infiniti dealer in 2008 and we warrantied seat belts on I30's from 1996 because they didn't retract properly or were frayed a little bit.

I will try to make a point of letting you know the outcome. I have the ignition recall to take care of and I’ll see about the seatbelt same time.

Around 2003-2004, I had a 1991 crx that I brought into the Honda dealer to replace the buckles that had come apart. They ordered in new buckles and put them in for no charge.

I found this statement on a BMW forum :

With the exception of the State of Kansas, the warranty for the seatbelts in our vehicles is no different than the original New Vehicle Limited Warranty. This warranty guarantees our materials and workmanship for a period of four years, or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first.

In the state of Kansas, the warranty for our seatbelts is ten years, unlimited miles. In order to be eligible for this coverage, the vehicle must have been originally retailed in the state of Kansas and the repair must be performed by an authorized BMW center in Kansas.”

After some more Googling, it seems that each manufacturer has their own policy, and that there is no federal law requiring free repair or replacement.

As far as I know, Honda in the U.S. warranties seatbelts for life. Not in Canada, though. Clearly, they hate Canadians.
